Helmet Laws in Michigan

WNDU TV Showed up at Murphy's Backyard Pub on June 8. They were looking for a local biker voice on the Helmet Law issue.

Just their luck they found me.

It was a nice story and I don't disagree with what they said I said, except that I never had a hot helmet (mine is a 3/4 helmet). I know it is a problem for some of us. I believe that it is a quality of life issue and a safety issue.
Helmets are not designed to protect at high speeds and might be a danger for the neck at those speeds. Helmets are best suited for lower speeds, the speeds that they are tested at.
I know people who have had accidents with and with-out helmets. most suffered leg/hand/back type injuries. Of those with head injuries, they have either recovered or are in recovery or dead (in that order). My personal big gripe is that I am hindered by vision, what little I do have.
Now, this Doctor I do have a major problem with... I don't know about any of you, but if someone is hurt, we have a benefit to help out. This idea that we are leaching when we have an accident is untrue and down-right unfair. If the guy doesn't believe that someone riding a motorcycle should be helped in a hospital - he should be looking for another job.
Now in Indiana the death rate has been going up in recent months. I keep hearing it is because we are drinking too much and that either we take care of it or our new Governor with have the police do it for us. I've been thinking, and maybe someone should check into this (Jay, that's you!). We all know that new riders are most likely to have an accident. Has anyone started thinking that just maybe with the price of gas soo high, that sunny day riders with say three or seasons of experience are pulling out the bike and riding more. I saw a T-shirt that goes "15 miles and $15,000 doesn't make you a biker". Does anyone really know how much experience these people really had? I now have over 8,000 miles in just over 10 months on my V-Star. Yeah - I went to a bar to celebrate. Met a friend and told him where I was at with the bike. He said that he has had his bike four years and still doesn't have that many miles. Hmmmm... Think about it. I've been seeing newer faces in the bars and hearing that they have been riding for years, so, I got to thinking.
Maybe I am just a little off, just a bit crazy. But, when something don't fit, I start thinking about what is really the problem. In this case I think we need to re-double our attempts to teach ourselves to ride. Nobody is looking out for us except us.
Another thought, the Doctor says that we believe it is our right to ride without a helmet. I don't know about you, but I was told driving is a privilege not a right. Thus, we have a privilege to ride without the helmet. A privilege that we should take to heart and respect.
