When ABATE first started in the 1970's we would do anything to get the attention of Legislators so they would listen to our cause. Now a days we have demonstrated that we really are civilized enough that they actually want to see us (not to mention that's what other lobbyist think, too). I heard it more then once that we are "the breath of fresh air", so to speak, in the otherwise mundane "suited" world. Our cause this year was one of those things you put off till you "have to" take care of it: handlebar height. Presently 15" above the seat while in use. We are looking to change that to shoulder height. On January 25 the Senate passed it with only 10 votes against. Our big push is in the house with many thanks to the members of the Senate who voted in our favor. My job, this year, was to make contact with everyone who represents my county (I was the only one who could make it from St Joseph County). A quick check over the Representatives showed that only one was available and I made every effort to see him. Rep. Niezgodski was most helpful in the House once he understood what I was looking to do. Within a short time I had an appointment with Speaker Bauer (who was in a closed meeting with Senate Pro Tem Long). While waiting I met Rep. Fry (who thought we were looking to lower (?) the height). Rep. Dvorak was in a Committee meeting in the basement, so I figured I would try the Senate side for awhile. Sen. Broden was in a Committee meeting, too, but I was assured that it had been going for some time and they couldn't be very much longer (oops). I was finally able to thank him for his vote (an hour later). Sen. Zakas was in Caucus, would have to send a message for now. Rep. Dvorak was now on the House Floor and unreachable. This is where you truly understand the importance of the Legislative Assistant. With a couple of questions I was able to get a message to him, and he came out to speak with me. Although I didn't have a chance to see Zakas I will contact him and give him our thanks for his vote. There were others that I had the good fortune to see and speak with while in Indy - these were the ones I felt I HAD to see. While wrapping up my day it was also a chance to spend some time with Gov. Daniels outside of his offices. The Governor does ride and is a member of ABATE. He spent much of his time talking about a few of the rides he had been on ("forget the radar, look at that sky!"). One thing I feel I have to point out about this event: ABATE of Indiana gained it's respect for always sticking to the point of Motorcyclist Rights when dealing with it's Legislative Agenda. There has never been a push at partisan politics, the motorcyclist has always been the first priority. Senators, Representivies and even the Governor look forward to this annual event which I find enjoyable too. |
